Do you really need those fancy ornament storage boxes? Find out the top three tips for saving money on Christmas storage here!

You've seen it all over Instagram -- those trendy red and green boxes ornament and wreath boxes. They sure look pretty and may do the job, but are they worth it? What is the best way to store Christmas ornaments and other items?
Before Christmas clutter becomes a permanent staple in your home, there are three key tips that can help you from spreading Christmas cheer too far. Plus, save money and reduce waste by utilizing things you already have at home!
Read on for our three top tips on ornament storage and more.

1. Pick The Storage That Makes $ense
While there are certainly plenty of "pretty" Christmas storage options, you don't need anything fancy to make your storage clean instead of cluttered. As a child, I remember tearing a piece of paper towel roll off and wrapping ornaments to stick in a shoe box. I don't remember a single thing shattering (unless we dropped it of course 😅) and it worked just great.
The paper-towel-shoebox method was certainly cost effective, but the boxes do wear down after years of use. I prefer color coding a labeling normal boxes, but what works best is up to you (see the next section for details on my method).
You have a couple options:
STORAGE OPTIONS | DETAILS | EXAMPLE* |
All-Inclusive | These boxes are MADE for Christmas storage. From red and green colors to inserts suited for ornaments, these options are made to fulfill your Christmas decor and gifting needs (and dreams, too). | |
Add Inserts | Many all-inclusive options come with inserts, but you can also buy (or build) your own to add to existing boxes) | ![]() |
Adjust What You Already Have | Get creative and use materials you already own for a low-cost ornament storage alternative. Tissue paper, leftover gift wrapping, and kraft paper can make excellent, protective packaging at almost no cost. | ![]() |

2. Use Color & Shape To Your Advantage
You don't have to use red and green -- use a color that makes sense to you! Yellow, gold or silver, or blue work great for the holiday season, too. All my holiday decorations are in containers with red lids so I can see them immediately.
I also keep most of my items in stackable boxes, with the exception of fragile items. For fragile items, I use odd-shaped boxes of the same color that don't stack. That way they have to stand alone or stack on top and avoid getting crushed.
**I use these for our shatterproof ornaments and they work great! They easily stack on top of our other containers and match the other elements of our storage system. (None of these products are sponsored)

3. Re-use The Original Packaging
Companies often try to use the smallest packaging they can for a product in order to save money. So, the original packaging can be the best option for storage!
Also, this allows for a lower level of waste during a season where extra boxes and wrapping increase the amount of trash going out.
